Microwave installation Milwaukee

Looking for DIY instructions. You‘re in luck. Here’s our process for replacing a microwave above the range.

Whether you live in a small space or are updating your kitchen, an over-the-range microwave oven can help you save space and provide convenient access while cooking a meal. While replacing a built-in microwave may not seem like an easy DIY, you can do it in just a few simple steps.

Step One: Gather Your Supplies

What you’ll need:

  • A screwdriver (type depends on the type of screws securing the microwave)
  • A non-contact circuit tester
  • A partner to help you (microwaves are heavy)

Step Two: Remove the Old Microwave

Follow these instructions in order to remove the existing microwave from it’s spot above the range:

  • Go to your electrical panel and find the circuit breaker powering the microwave. Turn it off, so you don’t get shocked.
  • Unplug the microwave from its outlet. Generally, the microwave is plugged in on a hidden wall outlet in the cabinet above.
  • Use your non-contact circuit tester to ensure the microwave power is off. Insert the tester in the right-hand slot of the outlet. If the tester does not light up, that means the power is off.
  • Take out any loose parts of the microwave, like the inner rotating plate, and set aside.
  • Ask your helper to support the microwave while you remove the screws securing the microwave to the above cabinets. Check your microwave manual to ensure you have removed all screws.
  • Keep your helper handy while removing the screws securing the microwave to the mounting plate. You will find these on the underside of the microwave next to the wall.
  • Carefully pull the microwave out of its location and set aside. You may find that the electrical cord gets stuck, so have your helper keep an eye on it. You may also need their help carrying the microwave if it is a very heavy model.

Step Three: Install the New Microwave

Follow these instructions to install your new microwave:

  • Ensure your microwave has pre-installed charcoal filters, which will enable it to work without needing to be connected to ducts. These filters are located inside the hood louver and can be seen through the slats in the louver.
  • Have your helper lift the microwave near the opening above the range. Run the electrical cord up to rest near the outlet, but do not plug in.
  • Carefully insert the microwave into the opening, and fit it closely against the back wall without damaging the electrical cord. Do a visual test to ensure the microwave sits above the lower tabs of the mounting plate.
  • Install the screws at the bottom and top of the microwave to secure it to the cabinets and mounting plate (see steps 4 and 5 in the above removal section).

Step Four: Test the New Microwave

Your new microwave is installed! Now, all that’s left to do is make sure it works. Follow these steps in order:

  • Plug the microwave’s electrical cord into the wall outlet.
  • Turn the circuit breaker that powers the microwave back on.
  • Turn the microwave on and test it’s functions.
  • Enjoy!
